Even with the modern camera, taking a picture isn't completely fool-proof. There's putting the film in, turning the camera on, pointing it in the right direction, getting your subject in the little window, making sure you can see what you want in the little window, ... and by way of positioning yourself, excluding anything you wouldn't want in your picture by making sure you can't see it in the little window.  Especially if it was an important picture, like first day of school; a picture you might want to share with Grandma and Grandpa.  A picture to last a life time. A picture that could show up at someone's wedding.
